CPR & First Aid Glossary
- ABC: Usually stands for “airway, breathing, circulation.” Also called a primary survey, this is the first thing to check if someone appears to be unconscious.
- Abrasion: Superficial skin damage. Essentially, a shallow cut or scrape.
- Anaphylaxis: A severe, whole-body, life-threatening allergic reaction. Common allergens for anaphylaxis include peanuts, bee stings, and some other foods.
- Angina: A sensation of pain in the chest, usually triggered by anxiety or physical exertion, that’s caused by the narrowing of arteries in the heart.
- Aspirin: A drug that reduces pain and slows blood clotting.
- Automated External Defibrillator (AED): A medical device that uses a controlled electric shock to restore a heartbeat after a heart attack.
- C-Spine or Cervical Spine: The portion of your spine in the neck.
- Concussion A concussion occurs when an injury or physical trauma “shakes” or “jars” the brain, often causing it to strike the wall of the skull.
- Contusion: Another word for a bruise. This occurs when there’s bleeding just under the skin.
- Epinephrine: A medication that supports blood pressure, used to treat severe asthma and allergy attacks.
- Epi-Pen: A medical device that delivers a controlled dose of epinephrine. Usually used during a severe allergy attack or anaphylaxis.
- Fracture: Literally, a break. Usually used to refer to broken bones.
- Compound Fracture: This refers to an injury where a bone breaks and the broken end pierces the skin, protruding from the body. Also called an open fracture.
- Hyperglycemia: High blood sugar.
- Hypoglycemia: Low blood sugar.
- Recovery Position: A position where someone is lying on their side, propped up by one leg. This position is used to prevent unconscious patients from asphyxiating on vomit.
- Shock: A condition where not enough oxygen is reaching the body. Shock can be caused by a wide range of issues ranging from blood loss to allergic reactions.
- Splint: A medical device attached to a broken limb, usually by wrapping, that immobilizes the limb and protects the fracture.
- TIA (Transient Ischaemic Attack): Also called a “mini-stroke.” Essentially the same thing as a stroke, but the symptoms resolve within 24 hours. TIAs are often warning signs for a stroke.
